In Sixth Form students have access to the 16 – 19 Bursary to support their continued education. This financial support can take many forms, but is subject to strict eligibility criteria. Please see the Sixth Form team or contact [email protected] if you have any queries.

There are three types of bursary available. To be eligible to receive a bursary in the 2023 to 2024 academic year, a student must be aged 16 or over but under 19 at 31 August 2023.
Students aged 19 or over are only eligible to receive a discretionary bursary if they are continuing on a study programme they began aged 16 to 18, or have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Students aged 19 or over are not eligible for vulnerable bursaries.
1. Vulnerable Bursaries
Students who are in one or more of the groups below can apply for a vulnerable bursary of up to £1,200 per academic year:
- Young people in care
- Care leavers
- Students getting Income Support, or Universal Credit because they are financially supporting themselves or financially supporting themselves and someone who is dependent on them and living with them such as a child or partner
- Students receiving Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments in their own right as well as Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit in their own right.
2. Discretionary Bursary
Discretionary bursaries can be awarded to anyone who is deemed to require financial assistance, based on the evidence provided. Whilst claims are encouraged at the start of each term, there is a recognition that family and personal circumstances change throughout the year. Families should contact the Sixth Form team to discuss support requirements and eligibility.
Bursaries for Mid-Priority Claimants
Where a student does not meet the higher-priority group criteria they may still be eligible for support. The school’s criterion is students who are entitled to free school meals (FSM). The school will need to be satisfied that the application is genuine following the standard procedures that are currently in operation for application for FSM.
Bursaries for Lower Priority Claimants
Where there is a surplus of funds after the allocation to students in Priority 2, then students with household incomes of less than £20,817 may apply for a lower level of support determined by their specific needs. The following evidence will be required for students in this group:
- A copy of entitlement to means-tested state benefit, or Tax Credit Award Notice confirming household income of less than £20,817; or
- Evidence of income from self-employment, a P60, or 3 to 6 months’ worth of bank statements as evidence; or
- Three most recent monthly award statements for Universal Credit.
3. Additional Discretionary Payments
These will be administered on a one-off basis, and will be paid strictly on individual merit to assist essential educational participation where hardship is experienced. For all claims, the school will ask for reasonable proof of need, and will ask students and carers to complete a confidential claims form. Students will be eligible to put in a claim for funding under the two categories below:
- Stationery, books and equipment which are not provided by or available from the school and which are essential for course participation.
- Associated costs of essential school visits, such as transport and meals.
Funding will not be sanctioned for non-essential extra-curricular activities or for personal resources which can be accessed at school. Claims should be made in advance of an activity, event, or purchase and unless the circumstances are exceptional, no payment will exceed £100. The school reserves the right to approve or not approve the claim. Payments will not be awarded as incentive or reward for school attendance.
