Adventures of King Edward’s Alumni

16th July 2018Mrs L Johnston

This summer, two King Edward’s alumni – Yasmine Shafiq and Elwin Marshall – will be volunteering for eight weeks with the Cambridge Development Initiative (CDI). CDI is a registered charity and student-led organisation which works in partnership with local government agencies to improve the well being of communities in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.

Operating in Dar Es Salaam’s informal settlements, where residents earn under $1 per day and lack access to adequate sanitation, the CDI Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) project implements a sustainable and community-centred solution. The WaSH project prevents water-borne illnesses by training and employing local technicians to build safe simplified sewerage systems, along with toilets. The new Year 13 students will recall Yasmine’s inspiring assembly linked to work experiences and enrichment and Year 11 students may also remember an assembly last Christmas from Yasmine about her previous work on this project.

To promote this initiative’s economic and environmental sustainability, the CDI WaSH team aims to offer biogas as a renewable alternative to charcoal. Since 2015, CDI has been testing biodigestor technology, which turns waste collected by the sewerage networks into biogas. CDI intends to ensure the continued benefits of the project by transitioning from the current biodigestor model to one that is locally sourced through a Tanzanian supplier. This shift will enable community members to efficiently undertake repairs while creating a social enterprise through which biogas sales will fund the construction of new sewerage networks. To accomplish this goal, CDI need to raise an additional £2,000.

Any donations, however small, from KEVI students, applicants, teachers or parents would make a huge difference to the impact that the CDI WaSH project could have this year. Please have a look at the JustGiving page for more information about the project (including impact reporting, photographs and video links) and consider donating if you can: https://www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/cdi/washproject.

We’re all going on a summer holiday…so make sure it counts!

10th July 2018Mrs L Johnston

The summer holidays are rapidly approaching and you’re all getting ready to let off some, well-deserved, steam. It is fair to say that this academic year seems to have flown by and has probably left a trail of shell-shocked students in its wake. The vast majority of you have spent the year working very hard; tackling that notorious jump from GCSEs to A Levels and sitting exams that may determine your future. What we are trying to say is, you deserve a break! Summer holidays are your chance to unwind, have fun and creative memories, as well as catching up with friends and family in the sun (hopefully!). However, six weeks is a long time and time that could be used wisely too. Being off during the week is a perfect opportunity to organise valuable work experience, even if this is just a couple of days spent shadowing a relative with an interesting profession. It could be your chance to get a foot in the door with a company you could see yourself at in the future. If you’d rather stay closer to home, there’s always the chance to get a couple of quick MOOCs under your belt too. Follow the link on Unifrog and find one that is related to the field you want to study/work in. Whatever experiences you choose to embrace this summer, remember…be proactive, seize the moment, stay safe and wear sun cream!

Bridging Week 2018 Resources

9th July 2018Mrs L Johnston

The week commencing 9 July 2018 sees the return of our hugely popular and successful Bridging Week. As a Sixth Form and School community we are delighted to welcome our applicants for 2018 to sample life with Sixth Form at King Edward’s.

Students are invited to sample a range of A Level and Level 3 subjects and meet their Form Tutor and the Sixth Form team. Students will follow a full timetable and immerse themselves in our inclusive community, embracing all we have to offer in terms of academic rigour, support and enrichment.

This year we are delighted to partner with Live-n-Learn to bring an exclusive opportunity to our prospective students to help them fully prepare and appreciate the transition from GCSE studies to Advanced Level. This will also give students a flavour of the quality and breadth of our Enrichment and Personal Development Programme.

We appreciate that some students are unable to attend the Bridging Week, but also that subject choices at A Level can be complex and difficult, and often decisions on subject choices are not fully certain until results. This is absolutely fine and normal! We will endeavor to meet subject change requests, this will be done during induction on 4 and 5 September. To assist with decision making and to support students unable to attend Bridging Week lesson resources, produced by our expert A Level teachers can be found via the Google Folder linked below:

New Cafe!

3rd July 2018Mrs L Johnston

At King Edward’s we want to give our students not only the best education, but the best experience. As part of that, and in response to student feedback, we’re delighted to confirm that a new and exclusive to Sixth Form cafe will open in September 2018!

Our vision is to create a bespoke space from an existing classroom that will provide somewhere to relax and socialise. It will sell high quality food and drinks, such as tea by local supplier Ringtons, coffee served by a barista we aim to employ, hot chocolate, cold drinks, and snacks such as croissants and pastries.

A deli counter will supply freshly made to order sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and salad boxes, along with traybakes, muffins, fruit, and biscuits.

Initially, the space, whose name will be decided by students and revealed during Bridging Week, will be open from 8am until 1.30pm each school day. We’ll also make sure we listen to student suggestions and act on them to improve it.

What should it be called? Click here to register your vote*

We want students to have the best of everything, and we’re always working to make our best better. We know that to help students be at their best we need to provide the best facilities. We’re really proud to have worked with students to be able to bring this space to life ready for the new school year, and we can’t wait to see it when it’s finished.

*Vote open for 24 hours from 9am on 3 July

Champions of STEM!

2nd July 2018Mrs L Johnston

Today saw the beginning of a weeks worth of STEM enrichment across the whole school, with Sixth Form at its heart. Mr Short, our STEM Coordinator has worked tirelessly to secure the Institute of Civil Engineers Bridge building event to be held in school across the entire week! We certainly feel very proud, as the last time we saw this event was at one of the Independent Schools we visited.

Throughout the week the Design Technology students in Year 12 who have an interest and passion for Engineering, will be working with a qualified Civil Engineer to build the suspension bridge. Today they have been trained with the equipment and taken on the problem solving and logistics of the whole operation! Peter, a Director the The Three Rivers Learning Trust and member of ICE is passionate and enthusiastic about supporting and developing STEM opportunities across the Trust.

The Year 12 students, one of whom is studying Bridge Design as part of his Extended Project Qualification, are thrilled at the prospect of getting hands on practical Engineering experience  – almost work experience but in a different format. The students will be mentoring over 80 Year 10 Design Technology students over the course of the week and finishing on Friday with a Girls in STEM event, where we will host Year 8s from our local Middle Schools.

This really is an exclusive experience for the students to develop their problem solving and logistical skills. To work side by side with a Civil Engineer for a whole week, as well as mentoring others will be invaluable for their communication and team work skills. Check out our Social Media feeds for updates on their progress and success.
