Applications for Sixth Form in September 2018

22nd January 2018Mrs K Shutler

Any student wishing to apply for entry into our Sixth Form should complete this online application form.

Students should check the entry requirements in the Sixth Form at King Edward’s prospectus, these are found on page 17. The entry requirements are a guide, and our informed judgement on what level of attainment at GCSE will mean successful progress and attainment at A Level. Do not let the entry requirements deter you from an application; be aspirational and let them be a motivator for your Summer exams. Every application, after results, will be judged on its own individual merit. All applicants will be considered and be invited to interview after results in August.

You should also check that your chosen combination of subjects are possible within the timetable. Use the latest option pool document to check. Applicants are invited to choose three A Level subjects from the four option pools. These pools are provisional at present. If your combination of subjects does not work, make a note on the application form and we will investigate and try our best. In the very small number of incidents where combinations of subjects cannot be accommodated, applicants will be invited for a meeting to discuss.

Bridging Week will take place during the week beginning 9 July, where students will try their chosen subjects for a week. This is an excellent week where students will get to know Sixth Form and our staff.

Following GCSE results in August, all students should confirm their final subject choices using an online form which will be available on our website on results day.

Applicants from Other Schools

If you would like a personal discussion and a tour of the school, please contact us via our email, [email protected]

We will send out further information during the year, but we would expect you to attend Bridging Week and a presentation afternoon on Friday 6 July.

Post 16 Information Evening

15th January 2018Mrs K Shutler

Thursday 11 January 2018 saw our annual Sixth Form showcase event. This is an event we are really proud of and it allows us to share our vision and ethos for Post 16 study and give you a flavour of what and how we do it.

As part of the event the Mr Simpson, Head of School and Mrs Johnston, Head of Sixth Form, supported by our Senior Students, Tom and Layla delivered a formal presentation. A copy of the presentation can be accessed via this link.

Post 16 Evening allow our expert teaching staff to discuss with students and their parents the realities of Post 16 study and what the A Level courses are like. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and we hope that those who attended found it informative and inspiring.

If you could not attend the evening, but would like to visit our Sixth Form or would like to discuss an application with a member of the Sixth Form team, please do not hesitate to contact us.

National Citizen Service Champion School Status for Third Year!

12th January 2018Mrs K Shutler

We have been named a ‘champion school’ by the National Citizen Service (NCS) thanks to its commitment to the youth programme. The school are delighted to be recognised for the third year in succession.

To achieve champion status, NCS asks that schools meet a number of key criteria in supporting the North East NCS team showcase the government-backed programme to young people aged 15—17. The status also reflects on the number of students from the school who grabbed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go on the NCS programme in the summer of 2017.

The King Edward VI School has been instrumental in supporting NCS by meeting a range of criteria consisting of, but not exclusive to, allowing NCS to present to students at assemblies and other events; reinforcing key messages to encourage as many students as possible to take part; identifying any students they think would particularly benefit from participation and supporting them to take part; briefing staff about NCS and supporting and celebrating students who have completed the scheme.

Leanne Johnston, Assistant Headteacher said “While it is nice to be recognised as a school and we are delighted with the reward, it is for the young people. The experience and opportunites offered by the NCS programme far outweigh any recognition we get as a school. We are proud of our association with NCS and we hope this continues, the aim is for every student in Years 11 and 12 to participate.”

“Places are now open for NCS this summer and I’d urge students to sign up and change their summer.”

The next NCS programme runs over the summer holidays, with 16 and 17 year olds eligible to take part. Government backing means places cost just £50 or less; young people in receipt of free school meals are eligible for a bursary.

The NCS summer experience includes a week of adventure at an outdoor centre in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales or Scottish borders where teens will meet new people and enjoy adventure, fun and freedom. Teens will then spend another week developing life skills like confidence, leadership and communication while staying in a uni-style environment.

They’ll then work with their NCS team to deliver their own community project – making a lasting impact on the local area. As well as helping to boost confidence and develop skills, NCS also helps to boost CVs and is recognised by UCAS, who encourage the scheme to be listed on personal statements.

To express an interest or to sign up, students or parents should call 0191 247 4020 or visit NCSNORTHEAST.co.uk.
