Ground Rules!

11th February 2020Mrs L Johnston

Do you have rules for how you speak to other people? How about, how you speak about other people? How about rules for how you speak to yourself?

And if you did – what would they be??

It doesn’t take much of a look into how our politicians speak to each other, how our soap stars go about their relationships, and how world leaders conduct themselves to make you think, that perhaps, these kinds of ground rules may not be such a bad idea – and may not be just for primary school children!

In our Year 12 wellbeing sessions this year we’ve set the ground rules as ‘Respect. Listen. Be nice.’ It sounds basic, right? But it doesn’t always come naturally….

Respect: Give regard to another person’s feelings

Listen: making efforts to hear what they are saying, and responding to them, not just waiting so you can say something

Be nice: in what we say to people and about people, whether in person or anywhere else.

These kind of practices can be transformational for communities, families (just imagine if they were adopted in parliament and world politics!) Most importantly, these values can massively impact how we feel about and care about ourselves.

We can be our own biggest critics – but while being honest about our challenges is good, our negative inner voice can often keep us down. What if we decided to respect ourselves more – who we are, what we think and feel and how our voice counts just as much as anyone else? We might just feel more free to be ourselves…

In fitness training it’s good to push our bodies, but listening to how stress, tiredness and other aches and pains are impacting us physically and mentally can help us see where we might be caring for ourselves better. If we made changes to look after ourselves, we might just find ourselves with more energy, more hope, more joy, more motivation…

And what about just being nice to ourselves! When’s the last time you truly gave yourself a pat on the back, or allowed yourself to celebrate, or enjoy something you’ve done? When’s the last time you really created space to rest, to play, to just ‘be’ with yourself or others around you who you care about? We might just find ourselves enjoying life a little bit more and having a greater capacity for dealing with the challenges…

So – Ground Rules – not just for kids! I wonder what yours might be for you!

National Apprenticeship Week 2020

10th February 2020Mrs L Johnston

This last week saw the 13th annual National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) supported by Amazing Apprenticeships and a diverse range of fantastic organisations. The aim of the week is to raise awareness and profile of apprenticeships.

This is the fifth year, that as a school and Sixth Form, we have actively supported NAW and spoke to the students about the huge range of opportunities that are out there. However, there is still the assertion that we don’t do enough; not just from students but from public figures like Lord Agnew.

As a Sixth Form our vision is for every student to fulfil their potential, achieve their goals and develop into a truly accomplished individual; celebrating and nurturing each and every accomplishment along the way. What students choose to do after Sixth Form is entirely up to them (and their parents/carers); we can only advise and share information so that students can make truly informed decisions. One advantage the UCAS process has is that it is one central admissions system where one application covers up to five different things and it runs inline with the academic year. High quality apprenticeships appear at any time, they cover a multitude of disciplines and organisations and each application and selection process is slightly different. We can’t tell students which is the best apprenticeship no more than we can tell them which is the best university or course. It has to be about the right opportunity for the right person and the right time.

During the course of NAW some additional things that we have done as a Careers team are:

  • Lead assemblies for Years 9, 10 and 11
  • Invited the ASK service in to discuss Higher and Degree Apprenticeships with Years 11, 12 and 13
  • There have been a range of tutor-led activities provided to complete in PSHE time
  • Teachers and Sixth Form students got an ’email a day’ highlighting some great facts and resources to support finding and understanding apprenticeships as a progression opportunity
  • We streamed The Big Assembly in the Advanced Study Centre for Sixth Form students
  • Displayed the latest Amazing Apprenticeships posters

In general we got people discussing apprenticeships and researching their options. Our core message when we talk to any of our students is:

Right opportunity, right person, right time.

Memorial Garden

21st January 2020Mrs L Johnston

The centre piece of the Memorial Garden arrived last week; a large Horse Chestnut. The Team Emily students braved the elements once again to help plant the tree which will form the heart of the garden.

The planting of this tree marks the second phase in the evolution of the garden, with the students aiming to add a bench and some art work by the end of the year.

We look forward to the saplings developing and seeing the garden come to life. Well done to the dedicated group of students who have worked tirelessly to realise their vision and provided a lasting legacy and memorial for their friend.

Trees for Emily

6th December 2019Mrs L Johnston
On an extremely cold and damp Tuesday in November, a group of 20 students spent time planting trees in memory of their much missed friend Emily. The weather was bitter and the ground was tough, but the students wrapped up warm and got their hands mucky in memory of their friend. The planting took place over the course of the day and saw 28 saplings planted. We will notice a marked difference in the spring as the saplings develop in the are just beyond the hockey pitch. The trees planted, which make the shape of the garden will grow to be around 4ft, with these hopefully flourishing in spring each year.
This will become a memorial garden with a Horse Chestnut tree to be added to the centre and a bench so that students can visit the area and have a place to remember Emily. The garden is in a quiet place and will hopefully become a staple of the school’s community.

Joy to the World…

26th November 2019Mrs L Johnston

I wonder if you’ll be singing (or humming) any carols this Christmas season – maybe as you go around the shops or Christmas markets, maybe if you go to a nativity play or church service – maybe to KEVI Carol service!

For people who believe that Jesus was someone special, someone who could show us what real love, wisdom & goodness looks like, for people who believe Jesus was God turning up here on earth, this carol is an overflow of their excitement and happiness ‘Joy Joy Joy – things are going to start to change around here because God has turned up!’

I wonder what would make you sing ‘Joy to the world!’ Maybe because at this time of year there’s a focus on delicious food, giving & receiving gifts, lazy days to curl up and be with your favourite people. Maybe because you have your own rituals, celebrations and traditions that happen through December. Perhaps because there’s a break from the usual routines – maybe there’ll even be snow!

Joy can come in all shapes and sizes – things that make us laugh out loud like movies, comedy, playing family games, as well as things that make us smile on the inside – the thoughtful handmade gift, the crunchy frost on the grass, a long walk by ourselves… Christmas isn’t necessarily a happy time for everyone – but perhaps, whatever we face this holiday season, we might take a moment to pause and ponder ‘what brings me joy’ – and let that feeling stay with us and warm us from the inside out.
